IMHO, too many adults miss out on the opportunity to celebrate themselves on their special day each year. As we grow up, I think people either (1) start to think that celebrating birthdays is for kids, (2) they want to ignore the fact that they are having birthdays (guess what folks, Father Time isn't ignoring it, so neither should you!), or (3) they forgo celebrating their own birthdays in lieu of celebrating their childrens'. I personally don't subscribe to any of the above schools of thought (although one could argue that I don't have kids yet, so the 3rd is simply moot, but whatever.) For as long as Chris and I have been together, we've always tried to make sure that we each have a special day to do whatever we want to celebrate our birthdays. Sometimes it's simple (i.e., dinner & bowling). Sometimes it's not. But the point is it's our day! And, we've made it a habit the past few years to celebrate the same way with Angie and Jim.
Enough with my philosophical birthday babble ... Months ago, Angie figured out that she would have to be in Vegas for work on her birthday (January 15th). Being out of town, away from family and friends, and, worst of all, working on your birthday sucks. Trust me, I know. It's happened to me, too. But, Angie devised a plan to make the most of this situation. It was actually pretty simple. She arranged an earlier flight to Vegas (Friday night instead of Sunday night) and then Jim, Chris, and I flew out on Friday night as well to spend the weekend knocking around Vegas before heading back to Dallas Monday morning. Genius!
We made arrangements for a 2 bedroom suite at an off-strip resort called Tahiti. It worked out perfectly! The suite had a full kitchen so we were able to hit a grocery store down the street for breakfast fixin's to save a few bucks. They had shuttles that ran like clock work to both ends of the strip.
We didn't do a whole lot of gambling. Actually, truth be told, Angie was the only one that ventured to a black jack table for a short time. The rest of us fed a few bucks to the slots, but that was about it. We weren't really there to gamble. We wandered from hotel to hotel just checking out the over-the-top themes and the almost as over-the-top people that were partaking of Sin City.
Check out the Aggies in Vegas!
We were mostly about the shows. Saturday night, we had dinner at the Bellagio Buffet and enjoyed the water show at the fountains in front of the Bellagio where we snapped this photo
Then it was on to New York, New York to see Cirque du Soleil's Zumanity. This was the 2nd time Chris and I had seen the show. In a nutshell, the 1st time was better, but it's still a heck of a show. The things these people can do with their bodies just isn't natural in some cases! Sunday night, we headed to the Venetian at other end of the strip to check out Blue Man Group. Seeing the Blue Man Group is an experience no one should miss. Personally, I've seen them 3 times in 3 different venues (a small theater in Boston, Nokia Theatre in Grand Prairie, and now Vegas) and each show had a little different content and feel. But, the over all audio-visual sensation is always phenomenal.
Unfortunately, the weekend was over all too quickly. Chris and I took at 5:45 AM shuttle to the airport Monday morning to catch our flight back to Big D. Hopefully, it was as memorable for Angie as it was for the rest of us! Happy (belated) Birthday, girl!
